The Ugly Kings- Strange, Strange Times
In the wise words of Daft Punk, harder better, faster, stronger… Estas fueron las palabras de Nic Dumont acerca de lo podíamos esperar del nuevo álbum Strange, Strange Times, y vaya que lo es. Pueden leer la entrevista aquí.
Al escuchar la primeras notas las palabras de Nic hicierOn eco en mi cabeza dije; Estos es The Ugly Kings con una inyección de altos decibles, Fue una sorpresa bien recibida disfrute todo el disco, y dejando claro que durante esta producción exploraron sonidos y estilos dando ese toque mágico.
Canciones como «Strange, Strange Times» las guitarras suenan espectaculares, «Do You Feel Like You´re Paranoid?» disfrute el estilo, sobre todo la batería es bastante pegajosa.«Lawman»una balada que agrega un aire «western» bajando la intensidad. «The Devil Come With a Smile» es mi favorita, subiendo y bajando el ritmo.
Strange, Strange Times respecto a sus trabajos anteriores es diferente, suena más agresivo y puedes escuchar que buscarón evolucionar su sonido pero sin perder su identidad .Una producción atrevida que deben escuchar a todo volumen.
Paralyzed – Paralyzed
Rock´n´Roll inyectado con psicodelia es lo que va a deleitar nuestros oídos a lo largo de 48 minutos.
Este homónimo nos transporta a un sonido de antaño donde este rock está lleno de matices y grandes pasajes musicales. Podemos encontrar un lento y suculento solo de guitarra melancólico hasta un riff atascado retumbando el cerebro.
«Paralyzed» es una agasage sonoro para dar una proba de lo que viene, «Lucifer´s Road» tiene el toque de los setenta, voz aguardientosa y riffs de guitarra pegajosos. «Noise On the River» tiene un breve puente de batería que lleva al final de una manera elegante. «Golden Days» agregando el órgano a la composicion le da el toque mágico. «This Woman» es una heavy ballad que nos adentra una narrativa densa y melancólica.
Lo que me gusto de Paralyzed es que pueden pasar de ballada a un rock sin perder su sonido pesado, van sobre la misma línea y ejecutan el disco de manera perfecta, además que la voz con tono rasposo agrega un toque desalineado.
Es álbum que puede acompañar un roadtrip o en una noche de tragos con un Jack Daniel´s
Indica – 3.
Siempre es un deleite encontrar bandas como Indica, descubriendo un sonido que no sabias que necesitabas.
“3” es un paisaje sonoro que van desde; stoner, doom y pasar por el drone, “3” no sigue reglas, como los minutos pasan la agresividad es clara. Las 5 canciones son excelentes, puedes sentir como este álbum es emoción pura.
“Antihaze” es el ejemplo claro, iniciando con vocales tranquilos que al final se convierten en guturales que complementan con instrumentos igual de agresivos. “Winter in Summer” una vez más los vocales trasmiten harmonía y las percusiones son mágicas. “Stone Future Hymn” es una catedra de distorsión y drone en su estado más puro.
“3” es una pieza de pura genialidad, los ritmos son perfectos y no dudan en hacer cambios en ellos. Con audífonos es toda una experiencia y a todo volumen… bueno, chéquenlo ustedes Howllers no se arrepentirán.
One Tail, One Head.
Los días nublados para mí son los mejores para ponerme mis audífonos y perderme por horas, ya sea en un álbum o una banda. Este fin de semana no deje de escuchar una de mis bandas favoritas que hace un tiempo me recomendó un familiar.
ONE TAIL, ONE HEAD originarios de Noruega, nos entregan un Black Metal puro que me hace recordar el misticismo de este género y reafirma por qué hasta la fecha “El Black” es mi genero favorito.
Dentro de su carrera podemos encontrar; dos demos One Tail,One Head y Demon II, dos EP One Tail, One Head y Tandava, una compilación One tail One Head, un single Firebirds B/W Prowess y un álbum Worlds Open, World Collide.
De estos lanzamientos mis canciones favoritas son: “The Splendour of the Trident Tyger”, “Firebirds”, “One Tail,One Head” “Cleanse,Enshrine in Madness” & “Sordid Sanctitude.”
El sonido es crudo y seco en cada una de las canciones se hace notar esa atmósfera lúgubre y blasfema.Nos llevan por altos y bajos acompañados de guitarras poderosas, guturales y un bajo exquisito.
La mayoría de sus lanzamientos fueron homónimos, y usaron el logo de la banda como portada en estos mismo y aunque es poco material fue suficiente para lograr esa “popularidad” en la escena underground y compartir escenarios con Taake,Abbath & Mayhem.
One Tail,One Head terminó su ciclo en 2018 y es cuando este tipo de bandas aumentan su valor como fan y empieza la eterna búsqueda de todo el material posible, que en la mayoria de los casos es difícil de conseguir, ya que como es costumbre en el género son copias limitadas. La forma más fácil es buscar en Discogs.
Howllers disfruten de One Tail,One Head y su solido Black Metal.
Deaf Radio – Modern Panic
Es hora de subir el volumen Howllers, Modern Panic es un álbum de rock fresco y de altos decibeles.
«Death Club»es el título que abre esta producción, un rock duro y pegajoso, la letra me parece interesante, una especie de visión a alguna adicción donde solo piensas en ti «Just like a parasite in our room, Tenminutes from your comfort zone, You‘re hooked on the sickness of your lust…» «Astypalea» es un track que cautiva con sus toques hipnóticos. «Modern Panic», una analogía del miedo a no cumplir tu «sueño», no llegar a la meta de la razón de tu existencia, es como sentí esta letra.»Gas Station People» tiene un sonido cautivador que lentamente nos dirige al final.
Deaf Radio me remonto a un sonido en mi épocas de «juventud» además mientras escuchaba este disco me recordó cuando escuche a QOSA, y eso no cualquiera.

El día de hoy nos adentramos un mundo de minificciones donde la inspiración proviene de dos géneros que han cambiado al mundo; El punk y el blues.

BlackSword – Alive Again.
Las lejanas tierras de Rusia de uno u otra forma no dejan de sorprendernos. Esta ocasión revientan nuestros oídos con un exquisito Heavy Metal.
Una dosis de agudos y pronlogados gritos al estilo Power Metal, guitarras gemelas lanzando riffs épicos, una batería a tono de guerra y un bajo imparable, es lo que BlackSword nos presenta en un total de 50 minutos.
De inicio a fin Alive Again nos enseña gran habilidad musical, en las letras vamos a encontrar batallas, guerreros y héroes caídos, así que seguramente les darán ganas de ver alguna epica batalla medieval. Esta historia esta divida en 9 canciones destacando; «Cave of the Witch» inicia espectacular además de tener riffs de guitarra jugosos. «Immortal Hero» tiene un puente de batería y guitarra que poco a poco incorpora el bajo creando una composición épica «Barbarian Born», el bajo, solo clávense en el.»The Last Viking» resaltan los vocales, alcanzando tonos muy agudos.
Alive Again es un álbum divertido de escuchar, tiene todos los elementos de un Heavy Metal sencillo y digerible, como los grandes pasajes musicales acentuando la historia fatástica.
Ancient Wisdom – A Celebration in Honor of Death.
Hoy disfrutaremos de un álbum que marca el regreso de Ancient Wisdom después de 17 años de ausencia.
Lo que van a escuchar es Black Metal atmosférico de alta calidad, el balance de la crudeza y los pasajes instrumentales, en ocasiones agregando segmentos acompañados de coros creando un ambiente denso, demostrando las bondades de un Black Metal bien producido.
Esta producción suma 50 minutos divididos en 7 canciones, de las cuales destacan; “Breaking the Circle of Life”, es misteriosa, los teclados son oro agregando ese toque mencionado. “The Coronation” es épica y el cierre es lúgubre. “Those Who Do Not Exist” es un deleite total de habilidad musical.
Este álbum demuestra que el Black Metal puede tener un sonido de calidad y no perder su esencia.
Mi recomendación es que lo escuchen con audífonos y se claven en cada nota.

A Talk With…
Howllers,rock is almost ready because on 13th of August 2021 will be enjoy the new record “Strange, Strange Times” let warm up and enjoy our talking with Nic, bass player and a friend. Discover the recording process during these pandemic days and what can we expect of the new record.
Thank for agreeing to have this interview with me.
How did the Ugly Kings feel mentally once the first 2020 lockdown had started?
Well given that the first lockdown happened literally about 10 day before we were booked to enter the studio to record our new album and we´d just come out of pre-production the previous that definitely put the spanner in the works at the time and pushed everthing back indefinitely. That was the most challeging part however we usued this opportunnity to reagroup an refine the songs and in the midtime Napalm Records got it touch with us so talk about meant to be.
Did the lockdown experience change your method of making and perceiving music? How has the pandemic affected you individually as artist?
Personally (Nic) I definitely listened to a lot of music to bring the positive out of a grim situation. Music has always been an escape for me so that helped a lot. I also took this time to practice my piano skills which has helped bring another dimension to the songwritting process. I also spent a lot more time playing bass and guitar at home, practicing my parts, writing song so all in all we kept busy.
November 2020 marked the fifth anniversary for “Of Sins” and you included five new songs for this celebration. How did it feel to dust off songs from the past?
It was great! These were songs we,ve always loved but we never took the opportunity to release properly. This lockdown has given us the time to remix and remaster this hidden gems and include them in this beautiful Of Sins’ Deluxe Edition on the very day of 5th anniversary of the original release (Friday 13th of November 2015/2020) It couldn´t have worked out any better.
What were the sources of inspiration for the new songs on the record, or had these songs already been in the works way back then ?
Given that we constantly write in rehearsals some of the riffs and structures existed before but they have been refined a lot throughout preproduction process, especially when our producer Julian jump on board and we had all this extra time due lockdowns. Lyrics wise, our singer Rusty has this poetic wizardry to turn current events, life stories o movie themes in to these increidble stories that are The Ugly Kings songs. That´s what this new album is all about.
I saw that it took 3 lockdowns to finish the recording of the new album. How was the whole process? At some point, was it difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel?
It was when the third snap lockdown happened the week before entering the recording studio that really was a gut punch. But it all worked out in the end, that lockdown didn´t last, we managed to squeeze a couple of more rehearsals that week and enter to the studio confident the following week. All in all the moment we were allowed to rehearse after each lockdown we were straight in the studio in the first day guns blazing and ready to roll. We kept in touch troughout with online meetings to talk about songwriting and release strategies so we never lost track of the end goal.
What can we expect for the new album? Have you chosen a name or release date?
In the wise words of Daft Punk, harder better, faster, stronger HAHA! Seriously this was our first album with the sound engnieer Julian «Doctor» Schweitzer and it´s been an absolute delight. His work ethic and attitude has brought the best out of each of us in the studio and we believe in this new album has all the signature Ugly King elements and then some! The album is called Strange, Strange Times and will be realesed on Friday 13th of August 2021.
You are now part of Napalm Records family. How does it feel to be under the wing of a new label? Do they allow you the creative freedom you feel is necessary for the Ugly Kings to record new music and experiment where you feel it’s appropriate?
We feel very honoured and proud to be part of the Napalm family! What´s best is that without lockdown we probably would have recorded the album as plan and release it independently in 2020 and missed the change to ever work with Napalm altogether, so everything happens for a reason, rigth? We believe we´re bulding a great relationship with them they´ve been awesome to work with. They listen to our opinions; they guide us and give us a lot of great advice without stepping on our creative freedoom. They believe in us and have been very supporting through the whole process so we couldn´t ask for a better start.
